RTS(Moscow)Market Overviews

Russian Stock Market Overview
12/12/2005-16/12/2005

During the 50th week, the Russian Stock Exchange index (RTSI) was increasing steadily from the point of 1082.4 in December, 9 to the figure of 1101.1 in December, 16. The total trading volume was approximately 192,6 billion EUR. Companies that caused a bigger change in the index were Lukoil, Surgutneftegas as well as Sberbank.

Oil Company Lukoil (LKUH) faced 179 trades this period, and the total trading volume was 66,7 billion EUR. At the beginning of the week, the price per share was 49,8 EUR. On December, 14 it reached a peak of 51,4 EUR per share and then it went down sharply to the figure of 50,5 EUR. Most probably such kind of changes was caused because of the fact that V. Alekperov, the president of Lukoil, had signed a contract with the head of Khanty-Mansijsk District A. Filipenko. According to it, the company will participate in financing of constructing sport areas and other buildings in Khanty-Mansijsk, overall more than 30 objects. In addition to this, Lukoil has signed new contracts, according to which the company provides a material support to such sport clubs as FC Spartak Moscow and speedway club Lukoil-Baskirija. The price for the shares are expected to fall because the company will get much less of its profits due to these investments.

Savings bank of the Russion Federation (SBER) faced only four trades during the week; however, the change in prices for shares changed dramatically. The prices have increased from 1000.8 EUR per share to 1015 EUR. This can be explained by the fact that Sberbank is going to pay dividends in the nearest future, and the total profits are a bit higher than it was expected. Probably, there will be the same tendency the next week as shareholders usually do not want to get rid of the shares of a profitable company.

JSC Gazprom (GSPBEX) shares were fluctuating in the price during the week. On the whole, their price from a fall of 1.13% (5.21 EUR) at the end of last week increased to 5.37 EUR at the end of the current one. More than 30,000 trades were made during this period. The rise of the price can be explained by two reasons. Firstly, it was awarded as “the best selling company of the year” during the «Global Energy Awards», New York. Secondly, the gas main was opened in Lithuania (Kaunas - Shakai) on the 15th of December that will lead to the increased volume of transportation from Minsk (Byelorussia) to Kaliningrad (Russia). The shares are expected to rise in value during the next week as well.

Mining and Metallurgical Company Norilsk Nickel (GMKNG) had a steady decrease in the price of the shares during the second half of the week. Starting from the 15th of October their value went to 71.57 EUR, despite the fact that they managed to peak at 73.05 EUR at the beginning of the week (12.12). This can be caused by the company’s restructuring of its share capital in the next year. Therefore, there is less sure about the shares’ price predictions. However, they are unlikely to go up in the next week.
