To learn how to “play” click on the corresponding button on the panel to the right.

Investment Game is a real-time stock market simulation which allows players to manage a portfolio worth 10,000,000 EUR by making virtual investments on  stock exchanges . After a simple free registration, each participant can trade securities online with quotes taken directly from the exchange market data providers. The prices and order status are updated every 20 minutes. This year the participants of Investment Game will have the great opportunity of making orders on a real  trading platform, which is provided by DNB Trade. The Investment Game website will also provide basic strategies on picking stocks, which might be really handy and helpful for the participants with no previous investing experience. Participants from all over the world compete for prizes awarded to the best performing portfolios. The award winners will be selected based on the criteria that can be found in the Rules section. Investment Game 2014 is organized by the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga Investment Fund supported by our main sponsor, DNB Trade.

Goals of Investment Game:

  1. Provide an opportunity to get a hands-on experience in stock trading without putting at stake your money.
  2. Encourage people’s interest in finance and economics, develop financial literacy and provide them with practical experience in this field.
  3. Promote intelligent investing activities instead of speculation.

History

The history of Investment Game dates back to the year of 1997. The popularity of Investment Game has been spreading across the Baltic Region and outside its borders since the first day of its existence. Throughout the last years of the existence of Investment Game, the competition has been held annually or semi-annually, each lasting for approximately two-three months. The number of participants has been continuously growing, reaching a peak of 9000 in the 2007/2008 edition. The popularity of Investment Game has crossed the borders of the Baltic Region leading to a steady increase in the participation rate of players from Europe and other parts of the world. The first participants of the Investment Game competition were the students from the Baltic universities. However, the successful concept of the competition has attracted a much wider audience interested in investing activities, which includes high school students and professional traders.

The continuous process of improving Investment Game on a yearly basis has made the competition more attractive to its previous and potential participants. As a result, the user interface has been improved, the selection of markets has been expanded and the number of errors has been diminished. This year is not an exception. A lot of improvements have been made in order to make the competition more realistic and user friendly. This year Investment Game celebrates its 17th anniversary and a new trading platform will be introduced. The platform will incorporate many new features and deliver critical information to the players through an improved and easy-to-use interface.

Evaluation criteria

The evaluation criteria for the second round of Investment Game 2014

The top 30 performers (according to portfolio returns) of the second round will be evaluated further on by looking at the returns of the portfolio, the reason behind your transactions and the diversification of your portfolio. The top performing participants will receive a grade for each of these three criteria. The following section provides information on how each criterion is graded.

It doesn’t matter when you send us the notes, but the sooner you do that, the better. Send the notes to the following e-mail address: ifund@sseriga.edu. You may also send your notes through the Contact Section on this website.

The members of the jury which are presented by DNB bank wealth management department  will evaluate your notes and portfolio basing on the following criteria:

For notes:

a) Company background details relevance

b) Relevance of the “buy” suggestion

c) How the suggestion is proved and described

For portfolio selection:

Diversification of the portfolio (how many stocks, in which industries/geographical locations). Here we don’t require to buy 20-30 or more stocks. As a rule of a thumb think at least about 5-7 stocks from different industries or countries and it should qualify for a good grade from our expert judges.

Important: only stocks which are held for at least 10 business days will be considered for evaluation.

From notes section you can get 0-30 points in total, and from portfolio – 0-20 points, so the maximum amount of points that you can earn from DNB wealth management judges is 50.

The final score will consist of the relative position of your portfolio returns in the overall ranking (if you are #1 or #2 – you get 15 points, if you are #29 or #30 – you get 1 point, for now suppose you got 10); average grade on investment notes (for example, for 2 notes you got 10 and 20 points out of 30, so your average is equal to (10+20)/2=15); and the grade for Portfolio selection (say, you got 12 out of 20). So the one who scores highest (in our example it is 10+15+12=37  points) will get the grand prize. In case of equal grades, priority is given to investment notes grade and  then to the returns of the portfolio.

Here is the short numerical example of participants’ A, B, C, D evaluation:

In general, we hope that such grading system will reduce the luck of some participants in portfolio construction and stock selection procedures. It should also encourage participants to apply long run value investment approach.

The hints on how to prepare short investment notes.

The main idea of such notes is for participants to feel as if they are hired as investment analysts. So, their main goal is to come up with compelling arguments why the company is undervalued or why it is a good moment to buy its shares now. The members of the jury expect to see a “one-pager” or the “company card”. In simple words:

  • List short information about the company and industry in which it operates;

  • Make conclusions why the company is undervalued. You can even prove it with some small calculations

  • Ideally you can build supporting DCF, DDM valuation models in Excel. But note that in many cases results of such valuations are already available in the internet.
It’s up to you to build a new one if you think that you have some more information.

Several ideas for investment notes:

a) Fundamental analysis of the company, review of major factors (micro and macro) that impact the performance most

b) Building DCF. DDM or multiple valuations models

c) News analysis. Pick ones which affect company’s fundamental performance most

d) SWOT analysis of the company.

The 49ers’ Challenge is a team-based Investment Game sub-competition specifically for groups formed to represent their universities, business schools or student-run investment funds. The teams will compete for pride and the honor of the organization they represent as well as the chance to win a valuable and prestigious prize – the 49ers’ Challenge Golden Coin. Similar to the Investment Game branch, the 49ers’ Challenge is a real-time stock market simulation which allows teams to manage a portfolio worth 10, 000, 000 EUR by making virtual investments on world stock exchanges.

The organizers of Investment Game 2014 invite you to participate in the 49ers’ Challenge and feel the spirit of the 1848-1855 California Gold Rush. This time, though, the challenge takes place in the biggest intellectual gold mine of the world – international financial markets. The tools you will be using have evolved – pickaxes and gold pans are replaced by investment strategies and financial knowledge. Your skills and determination will decide the team to become victorious and take the well-deserved Golden Coin.

History

The first successful attempt at arranging the team-based competition 49ers’ Challenge was the 2011-2012 edition of Investment Game. The first edition of the 49ers’ Challenge gathered a number of 30 universities from all around the world and this number has been on a steady uptrend in the years to follow. The first team to win the 49ers’ Challenge and receive the Golden Coin was the Eotvos Lorand University from Hungary. Previous year, the 49ers’ Challenge Golden Coin was awarded to the representatives of the Aberystwyth University from the Great Britain. Starting from this year, a special section of the Investment Game website will be dedicated to the team that wins the 49ers’ Challenge, which will allow everyone to get acquainted with the top performers in this branch.
